As usual at byelections, the Liberal Democrat campaign in Ealing Southall is a highly impressive organisation. When I arrived there with a gang from Islington at first I was a bit disappointed that there weren’t more Lib Dems kicking around the HQ - but when we were sent out to canvass, which involved driving almost the whole length of the constituency, I saw why - people wearing little orange stickers seemed to be everywhere!
I get the impression that the Tories are fighting it very much as an ‘air war’ - there certainly are some extremely large posters of Tony Lit, their candidate, up around in some places - but not doing much actually on the ground in the way of leaflets and canvassing. Obviously the Lib Dem campaign is very strong on the latter!
And although there obviously are a lot of Labour voters, they also don’t seem to be as active on the ground as I would have expected - perhaps the implosion of their local party, following the selection chaos, is having some effect.
It will be very interesting to see how all this plays out in terms of people actually voting!

Many thanks for coming over Jeremy! Hope you can make it over again soon - polling day is very, very close now.
